Fortress Europe

This one was used for a book in Spain ( no other details). It is of the high border fences between the Spanish exclave of Mellila and Morocco in north Africa. It shows the scene on a ‘normal’ day with a couple of people out walking and private cars driving along a well maintained road on the Spanish side of the boundary. Often more dramatic images appear in the press – of migrants straddling the fences and military type Civil Guard vehicles patrolling.  Having the walkers in the picture adds a sense of interest in addition to scale. The cars suggest people going about their normal everyday business. But there is no escaping the message sent out by those enormous fences on the border of fortress Europe.

High security fences separate the Spanish exclave of Melilla, Spain from Morocco, north Africa, January 2015.
